Faro, Portugal — The Pirelli Star Driver programme moved on to the Vodafone Rally of Portugal this week, where all five crews made good progress on the hot and dusty stages inland from the event’s Faro base. Four of the five Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution Xs made it to the finish at the Algarve Stadium this afternoon (Sunday), with only Ott Tänak failing to get through the final test. Auckland, New Zealand — BP Ford Focus driver Finland’s Jari-Matti Latvala won Rally New Zealand after a day of high drama in the four special stages near Raglan.
Latvala and co-driver Miikka Anttila snatched the win on the second run of the iconic Whaanga Coast test, the very last stage of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship’s fifth round. Latvala pushed hard to overtake overnight rally leader Sébastien Ogier of the Citroën Junior Team.

Auckland, New Zealand — Norwegian Petter Solberg, driving his privately-entered Citroen C4 world rally car, leads Rally New Zealand, after the first day of competition on ultra-slippery gravel roads north of Auckland.
Solberg, a firm favourite with New Zealand rally fans, set the pace in the fifth round of the 2010 FIA World Rally Championship from the outset, winning stage one and opening a narrow lead over Sébastien Ogier’s similar car, despite running second on the road.

Auckland, New Zealand — Patrik Sandell, driving a Red Bull-backed Skoda Fabia S2000, has ended the opening day of the Rally New Zealand in fifth position of the Super 2000 runners.
While the Swede is relieved to get to the end of the opening day, it has not been the best of starts for the Skoda driver. Patrik, who is competing in the Super 2000 World Rally Championship this year, hit a large bird on only the second stage, which damaged his windscreen and put him off his rhythm. more...
