Fans and friends of Richard Burns, who died from brain cancer four years after winning the World Rally Championship in 2001, will remember the British hero during a special gathering at the base of the former Subaru WRC squad on September 25th.
Burns secured the title with the Prodrive-run Anglo-Japanese outfit and officials from the organisation have teamed-up with the Richard Burns Foundation charity to pay tribute to Burns, who won 10 WRC events alongside co-driver Robert Reid.
The highlight of the Remembering Richard event, which takes place at Prodrive’s headquarters in Banbury, Oxfordshire, UK, will be an engine ‘sound-off’ in place of the traditional minute’s silence.
It will begin when the Impreza WRC, which carried Burns to world title glory, is fired up. Some 400 owners of the limited edition Richard Burns Impreza RB5 and RB320 road cars, that are scheduled to flock to the gathering, will then start their cars’ engines to show their appreciation of the Reading-born driver who fell ill in the closing stages of the 2003 season and lost his brave battle with cancer in November 2005.
Other attractions during the day will include a display of some of Burns’ old rally cars plus the opportunity to meet some of those people who played a key role in his rallying career, including Prodrive technical chief David Lapworth, his father Alex Burns and navigator Reid.
Three hundred commemorative Remembering Richard polo shirts will be on sale on a first come, first served basis along with RBF merchandise.
All proceeds will go to the Richard Burns Foundation, the charity established following Burns’ death to help those suffering from brain cancer and other neurological disorders.
Admission to the event, which runs from 1000hrs-1500hrs local time, is free but organisers would welcome a contribution to the RBF.
