2012 DAKAR RALLY ROUTE PREVIEW
With the start of the 2012 Dakar Rally only days away, the drivers and crews prepare to charter new territories in this edition on the world’s toughest race. In years past, the route has taken the contenders through the changing terrains of Argentina and Chile. This year the course will enable the competitors to discover new land and new challenges as they make their way to the finish in Lima, Peru.

On January 1st the drivers will begin the 14-day race in Mar del Plata, one of the biggest cities in Argentina. From here, they will make their way toward the Andes Mountain range to cross into Chile, all the while experiencing the natural obstacles that make up the Argentinean landscape. Of the five stages that take place in Argentina, the first stage is 763km or 474 miles, making it the longest stage in the rally.
Once the competitors cross into Chile, they will follow the Andes Mountain range working their way between the mountains and ocean. As the course takes the teams northbound from Antofagasta to Iquique and into the Atacama Desert, it will prove to be a test of skills for the racers, not only for the drivers but the navigators alike.
The rally will enter Peru for the first time on January 12th with two special stages. With the finish line only 4 stages away in the capital city of Lima, the racers must first maneuver their way thru the dunes filled country before the celebration of completing the 2012 Dakar can begin.
To experience the Dakar Rally is the ultimate goal of an off-road racer. The extreme conditions, first class competitors and the thrill of not knowing what lies ahead is what makes the Dakar Rally so alluring. But it’s the challenges, the sights and experiences that make it memorable.
Robby Gordon and Nasser Al-Attiyah along with their navigators will be competing for Team SPEED in the 2012 Dakar Rally. Both drivers bring many years of experience as well as successes in the rally and in off-road racing. Gordon, the first American to ever win a stage, and Al-Attiyah collected the 2011 overall Dakar Rally victory.
“I’m looking forward to the new route that takes us into Peru. It’s a country we’ve never raced in and it will be cool to see the challenges and obstacles the course has in store for us,” says Gordon.
